About Beltane

‘Beltane honours Life. It represents the peak of Spring and the beginning of Summer. Earth energies are at their strongest and most active. All of life is bursting with potent fertility and at this point in the Wheel of the Year, the potential IS conception. On May Eve the sexuality of life and the earth is at its peak. Abundant fertility, on all levels, is the central theme. The Maiden Goddess has reached her fullness. She is the manifestation of growth and renewal - the Goddess of Spring - the May Bride. The Young Oak King, as the Green Man, falls in love with her and wins her hand. The union is consummated and the May Queen becomes pregnant. Together they are symbols of the Sacred Marriage (or Heiros Gamos), the union of Earth and Sky, and this union has merrily been re-enacted by humans throughout the centuries. For this is the night of the Greenwood Marriage. It is about sexuality and sensuality, passion, vitality and joy. And about conception- the sowing of seeds - an amazing time in the Wheel of the Year to bring ideas, hopes and dreams into action.’

Ceremonial fires have existed for thousands of years within multiple cultures and religions, and for varying reasons. It’s thought that human interaction with Sacred Fire may have been as early as 1.5 million years ago in Africa and legends describe how the Teotihuacanos in Mexico conducted a New Fire Ceremony at certain times to renew the Sun -  the single most important event on the Aztec calendar.

Fire is one of the 5 Elements and is powerful for releasing negative issues that no longer serve us, transforming and manifesting a positive future to fulfill our dreams.  When we come to a Sacred Fire we must do so with humble intention ready to change ourselves for the better.

Lighting the Fire

IMG-7539 (1).jpg
  • Fires are normally created in box shape or teepee shape and have a traditional process

  • A dry base

  • Dry paper twists and tinder

  • Kindling on top

  • Larger dry kindling placed around that in a teepee shape

  • This is then blessed with tobacco or herbs

  • As we light the paper we sing or pray to the fire to burn brightly and bring us the healing we need

  • Only once the fire has caught and is burning do we add heavier wood or sliced logs to bring us the powerful fire we need.

The Fire responds to the energy of the people who surround it and so we try to stay in high frequency of respect and love for all beings when we stand together in circle to do our work.

We gather around the Fire – often using sage smudge to begin our clearing of personal energy. Then we make an offering of herbs to bless the Fire asking for its help.  When we work in gratitude and thanks the Universe and Divine Source is more likely to support the co-creation of what it is we desire.  We approach close to the Fire with respect and can pull the Fire Energy with our cupped hands over our head, heart and body.

Releasing with Fire

There are many ways to work with Fire to release issues and bring healing.

  • We can write things on paper that we wish to release and burn them with that intention.

  • We can use an ancient Celtic Salt Ritual as salt cleanses negative energy.  We take a handful of coarse salt and herbs and draw it close to the chakra or area of the body that we feel is blocked by this energy. We then direct the negative issue or energy into the salt and throw it into the fire for transformation.

  • To heal unresolved relationship issues we can write a letter to that person expressing whatever emotion is being held and put it in the fire with love

Manifesting with Fire

When we feed Fire with offerings of thanks it responds to our energy

  • We can write what it is we wish to manifest on paper and burn it. This can be any desire whether physical, emotional or spiritual.

  • We can sit by the fire and and meditate on our dream – visioning it into existence

  • We can use the fire as a vision board and draw what we are visioning into our hearts or bodies

  • Create flambé torches with a stick and long narrow strip of cotton. Wind the cotton around one end of the stick placing your dreams and wishes into it, as you wrap the cotton. Tie the end by splitting the cotton and tying it around in a knot.  Place in a small jar of lamp oil till the cotton absorbs the oil. Light the flambé torch and as it burns, hold it high and dance your dreams into being.

Using Fire as an Oracle

Once the Sacred Fire has moved to its red ember stage, take yourself into a meditative state, close your eyes and bring forward a question in your mind and when you feel drawn, open your eyes and look at the fire with a soft gaze and allow it to show you your answer though a Fire Vision.

Always remember to say thank you to the Spirit of Fire at the end of your Ceremony
